I am calling in via phone from my cabin, my lodge here in Birch Street, Missouri, and, uh, we're talking current events in segment one. Uh, all, we got great shows lined up. Our special guest today is Mr. Brad Doyle of Eagle Seed. He's gonna teach us the proper way to get our properties ready for food plotting, Redbone. Oh, that'll be great. And you know, it's coming from the expert. He is an expert, and he, you know, I, I tried to reach him two or three times. He's been really, really busy. He's had some guests from other countries coming in and looking at the beans and the rice and stuff that they grow at their farms there in Weiner, Arkansas. Wow. But, uh, he is gonna join us at 12:10 today. So we'll have him on the show talking about food plotting. And by the way, I wanna say I've got food plot seed. People needs Eagle Seed Smorgasbord. I've got some in stock right now. I've gotta go down and pick up some more, but I think I've got about 24 bags left right now. Okay. And, and, uh, you know, I, I guess w- and we'll get more into that with Brad in a little bit, but, uh- Yeah ... you know, somebody go ahead and get that seed and get it ready to go, and then, uh, you'll be ready when the time is right. Yes, sir. It, uh, I'm planting about two to three weeks is what I'm gonna plant. Yeah. Uh, I wanna make mention, I'm switching gears here to a different subject. Uh, we got the jamborees coming up pretty soon and high school football, you know, everybody's ready for that. Then we got NFL kicking off. Yep. Uh, th- that's pretty cool. Yep. And I wanna make mention, this past weekend we had the Current River Smallmouth Association tournament, and, uh, a big shout-out to Kelly Ramsey and Eddie Burke. Man, they dominated the CRSA this weekend. The river, we got breaking the rain at my place Friday night before the tournament, and the river got dingy on the upper current and got down into the lower. And, uh, Kelly Ramsey and Eddie Burke weighed in 12.74 in five smallmouth redbones. Wow, that's a, that's a pretty good stringer right there. That's over a two-pound average. Yeah, that's gonna win you a lot of tournaments, river fishing. Yeah, and second place went to Aaron Nicholson and Eric Cramer. And third place, I'm looking at the weigh-in board as I'm talking to you here. It was a quite, quite the, uh, tournament, redbone. We had 16 entrants, and third place went to Dakota Connell and Robbie Williams with a weight of 10.09. Second place was 10.49 with Cramer and Nicholson. Fourth place was Mike Richter and Dalton Yarborough with 9.90. And fifth place was Tyler McAfee and Counter, Gary Taylor, with 9.07. Nice. Uh, we weighed seven pounds, Rick York and I did. We just could not catch, get the big fish to bite, redbone. We caught all of our fish on a spinnerbait and down bait is what we caught them on until the river started coming up. 11:00, the sun come out, and it was like everything died. Yeah. Well, that's the way it goes some days, and, you know, some days you catch them, some days you don't. Yep. Hey, I got to do something really cool over the weekend, Alex. I went to the Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, and I'd like to say I've never been to that event before, but what a wonderful event it is. I know you've been there many times. And, uh, I wanna say congratulations to all the people that were inducted into the Hall of Fame, including our buddy Tommy Garner, and including Uncle Ted, Ted Nugent, and Ted was there on Saturday. And I gotta tell you, Alex, I've been a fan of Ted Nugent since I was, like, 13 years old- Mm-hmm ... back in the early 1970s. And I play some Ted Nugent on guitar, and I mean, I've... But I'd never been somewhere to hear him speak when he was asked to speak about hunting and fishing and conservation, and the man was absolutely marvelous. Yes, he is a v- a very prolific speaker and, uh, he, he's a hard act to follow as well if you're getting inducted. Yeah. I, I'm sure they waited till the end to induct him- Yeah, he was last ... to induct him because of his speech. Well, let me tell you- But, uh- I, I'd like, I'd like to kinda re- recap one thing that he said that, uh, hit me really hard, and I think it did everybody in the audience. Uh, Ted was talking about conservation and how we need... And he said, "In this room," and there were 400 people in the room. He said, "In this room, the best of the best confer- conservationists." He said, "I'm gonna tell you something. I got a pickup truck, and it is beautiful." He says, "Covered in stickers and, and pictures and all kinds of stuff. It's 1,100 horsepower. It's got a six-inch lift, 37-inch wheels, big old mud flapper tires." He said, "But it's got a flat." " And guess what the one thing about this beautiful truck that I am concerned about? The flat." He said, "And that's where we are with conservation. We got a lot of great people, we got a lot of good stuff going, but there are some flat spots in what we're doing, and we've got to get them fixed." Well said. What a great analogy- Yeah, I thought, I thought it was wonderful ... from Ken Duke. Yeah, it was just a, a great a- analogy and, and, you know, a comparison and, and I got to thinking about that while he was talking. I said, "You know, he's exactly right." Um, there is nothing better than being in the outdoors and, uh, you know, as good as it is, there are some f- flat spots that we've got to get fixed. Yeah, it's kind of like in our country. You can use that analogy in reference to America as well. Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah. So moving on here, the Cardinals are 60 and 60 right now, Redbone. Yeah, they got a win- A 100 ball team. Yeah, we're record- we're recording on Wednesday, and they, they won Tuesday night. They should've won Monday night, but they made some, uh, managerial errors late in the game. Uh, but, um, yeah, I mean, they're okay. But they're playing the Phillies, and here's the thing, the Phillies have a worse bullpen than the Cardinals do. Uh, so once the starters get- Yeah ... out of there, then that's when both teams start scoring. Matter of fact, the Polante kid only gave up two hits, I think it was last night, threw six innings, and then Cardinals went to the bullpen, and the bullpen actually held together. They won two to nothing. But, uh, it, it, it still, it all comes down to pitching always. I don't care if you're playing Pee Wees or high school or college or professional. It all comes down to the pitching. I agree 100%. I agree 100%. I wanna make mention, uh, I leave tomorrow morning, again, it is Wednesday at noon we're recording, uh, tomorrow morning for the Tribe Five National Convention in Bowling Green, Kentucky. There's 15 of us Tribe Fives that's headed out from Shannon County tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM, and we're driving five and a half hours to Bowling Green with our Tribe Fives. It's gonna be a neat experience. I've been wanting to go most of my life, and I'm finally getting to go this year. I didn't have a tournament. But I wanna make mention also, the next CRSA tournament's at Doniphan, Missouri on the 22nd of August, and that's where teams fish and anybody can fish, and you don't have to be a member to fish. And the next River Masters Tournament, where you gotta be qualified to fish, you've got to, it'll be on the 29th. Okay, very good. Alex has had to step away for just a little bit, and, uh, hopefully he'll be back with us a little bit later on in the program. But we do have our guest on the line, Mr. Brad Doyle from Eagle Seed down in, uh, Weiner, Arkansas. Is that correct, Brad? That is correct, here in Northeast Arkansas. Yeah, so how you doing? We're doing good. It's gonna be a hot and dry August for us. Uh, you know, a little, little rainfall, so, uh, some of the plots are, are starting to show, dry land plots. Over here, fortunately, in row crop country where you can irrigate, we have had a little, uh, little help. Yeah. Well, and that certainly does help. So before we get going here, Brad, for people maybe that have not been with us when you've been on before, uh, tell us a little bit about Eagle Seed Yeah. So Eagle Seed is a family-run business, um, started by my, my wife's, uh, parents. Uh, but her grandfather was actually a farmer who started, you know, farming this part of the world, and we farm soybean, rice, wheat, oats, and then run a full service seed company and market all over the United States and even in Canada. Yeah, and, and y'all are, I mean, uh, kind of the front runners when it comes developing, uh, improvements in the seed. I know that's something that y'all are constantly working on, uh, ways to make them more resistant to, uh, well, I guess, disease and, and the elements and things like that. Um, and I think you've got some new stuff to talk about today, but, um, i- it's gotta be rewarding when, when you're doing research and, and you're, you know, you're doing the work, and then all of a sudden something works. It's like, okay, this is gonna work, and, and it's accepted by the, uh, farming community, and that's gotta be very rewarding for y'all. It, it is, Mike. And, and so, I mean, you know, people can do research on their farm and... but it's usually a very simple research where they just plant one, one thing next to the other, and they only have it, you know, in one seeding rate, in one, one scenario, and, you know, whatever that year, uh, gave them, they, that's the results. Well, in, in row crop research and in breeding research, which my wife is a plant breeder, so we, we go really in depth on all of those factors. We can look at different, different row spacings, planting dates, seeding rates, but more specifically in wildlife food plots and cover crops, we get to look at combinations of seeds. And so it would be very easy to plant some, some plant that was really large-leaved and shaded out, you know, a clover- Yeah ... compared to a brassica or something. So that's what I really enjoy, is getting into the, the weeds, so to speak, and, and deep diving into those types of issues. All right. So Brad, as you see it right now, we're gonna talk food plotting today, folk, and Brad is gonna give us some, uh, uh, some ideas and, and some of his thoughts on how to get ready for getting those food plots out. But, um, as we sit here, you know, the second week of August, ideally, when should people out there, and we're talking Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas, when should they start really thinking, "Okay, I need to get these food plots ready to go"? So I think we sh- probably, Mike, should've been thinking about it a month or two ago when- Okay when we should've taken that soil sample, right? Yeah. Um, I, I think, I think seed, seed plot companies are, we're all guilty of showing advertising the best of the best, you know, whether it's a clover plot or wheat plot or whatever. So in, in the pictures and, and selling, we're showing you the best. The problem is you may not have the best location to plant, so we need something a little more bulletproof, a little more, uh, resilient and, and mostly we need to know what, what that soil is capable of planting and that's, that's where that soil test and, and full analysis of pH and, and, uh, macro and micronutrients, uh, CEC, things like that will tell us or, or help lead us in the right direction. Yeah, and of course people do those soil tests and if you don't try to correct whatever weakness there is, then- You're, you're kind of spinning your wheels, aren't you? That is right. And, and some amendments like lime take time, so it is not something we can change in overnight, in a couple of weeks, sometimes even a couple months. So it's better to be ahead of the game. And, and if this is a, a property you own or you have a long-term lease on, or it's, you know, it's in the family, you know, keeping up with the soil test yearly is, is a very simple, effective way. But also just think back to what has grown there in the past. Was, was it a, was it a woodlot? Was it, uh, you know, was it pasture? And, and it... I mean, the ground will kind of tell on itself- Mm-hmm ... whether it's been capable of planting, if it's in a flood zone, uh, if it hasn't done much at all, if it's got soil compaction problem. Things like that would be nice to know, and that way you get a game plan on how to approach the, you know, planning for this next season. Yeah. Now Brad, uh, one of the things I remember from my ag classes in high school 50 years ago was, uh, rotating crops. Now, should the, should the outdoorsmen out there that are doing food plots, should they be rotating their food plots as well? I think we do in year rotation, Mike. So what you're, you're referring to is year to year rotation. Yeah. And that's very common in a soybean and corn or soybean and rice or cotton rotation in, in agriculture. We do that. Mm-hmm. But think about this. In in year rotation you could do soybeans in the summer and, uh, overseed it with a, like a blend, you know, like our Smorgasbord blend or something that into in the fall. You're actually... What you're looking for is that microbial, um, you know, soil life- Mm-hmm ... health, benefits of rotation in the microbiome of the soil. You get that with, with overseeding your plots every year. Okay. You know, plant, you know, summer and, and fall, you are rotating in a sense within the year, within the 12-month cycle. Okay. So it's kind of taking a, a basic farming principle and, and kind of speeding it up a little bit. Absolutely, 'cause you're keeping something growing out there all the time. You are in- you know, incorporating different types, species of plants. Where you do need to be cautious of is, is when you have problems that show up, maybe it's johnsongrass in, in, uh, in a, in a grass crop that's, you know, hard to control. Then we can switch to soybeans, which it's easier to control that. Or vice versa, if we've got, you know, a really, really heavy infestation of, of pigweed or something like that, we, we need to maybe switch to, uh, we do have options for soybeans now to control some of those tough to, or hard to control weeds like marestail and pigweed in season, so. Okay. We don't necessarily have to shift the crop species. We could change the, the weed, uh, technology tool. Okay, you said a word there that got me, because I've been, I've been questioning myself about this, and I don't know where to get the answer, but it seems to me johnsongrass is becoming more and more prevalent around the Ozarks, and I'm talking about in the road right of ways, and even in my garden. My biggest fight in my garden is keeping the johnsongrass out. Why is that? It seems to be more prevalent now than it has been in the past. And, and, and Mike, it's probably rhizome johnsongrass. You know, there are different types of r- of, uh, of emergence of, of johnsongrass. You have seedling- Okay ... which comes from the seed, or rhizome, which comes from that root, you know, root rhizome structure below ground, and that is the one that is a lot tougher, and it usually comes up in clumps. And, and, you know, if you're not battling it, hitting it two or three times, keeping it in check, and you let it go to seed, you, you've, you know, you've, you've lost the battle that year. You can always keep at it, but no, I ... Johnsongrass is a toughie. Um, and I think the easiest method is to go to a broadleaf plant or crop system and, and just keep at it. We've got several tools in our toolbox. Uh, a product like clethodim, you know, which controls grasses, and alternate with something like Roundup, which, which is more of a broad, uh, bar- broad spectrum herbicide. Mm-hmm. We even use Liberty. So I think using different products in combination or in rotation will help you, help control that, that weed much better. Gotcha. Okay. I'm Reverend Mike Race. Alex, not with us today and, uh, be back with us next week, I think. Uh, we have Brad Doyle on the line from Eagle Seed. We've been talking about, you know, kind of getting your property ready and, and starting making, uh, starting making plans for food plotting, and the food plots probably should be going in the ground, Brad, I'm thinking within the next two or three weeks, if it dries up enough that we can get a disc in the ground. I mean, it's really tough out there right now. Yeah, so we usually have, we usually have it's too dry, right? Problem. Yeah. You, you can have either/or in August. And so, uh, yeah, you don't want, definitely don't wanna get in there if it's too wet. Um, but we, we do like to have some moisture to get it up, get established early on. You know, one of the few risk of planting too early is armyworms. So that, that's really, I think sometimes it's, it's, it's worth the risk if you want, you know, something green and growing October 1 to, to hunt over. So get after it, like you said, next couple of weeks is, is perfect timing to get started. Yeah, and with this extremely warm weather, the armyworms do become a real issue. Yeah, you could delay it a couple more weeks if it is a p- a problem in your area and, and maybe go, I don't know, 10th to 15th of September if you need to, and that would help, uh, probably avoid that problem. Okay. And, um, and I always like to say whenever we get on the topic of armyworms, if you do see an infestation of armyworms in your field, whether it's, you know, hay grass or alfalfa or, I mean, whatever it is, armyworms, please notify your neighbors so they'll be on the lookout, and everybody can kinda, uh, work together to get rid of those things because they can be devastating to, I mean, more than one farm in just a very short period of time. Yeah, the moths come in, lay the eggs, uh, overnight. In a lot of cases, the eggs hatch in about three days and, and like you said, then they start growin' and usually in, you know, 10... They can hang around 10 or 11, 12 days or so, but you're right, the quicker you can respond and get 'em controlled, the less damage they'll do. Yeah. All right. All right, so, uh, folks, again, we're talking with Brad Doyle from Eagle Seed. Now, before we went on the air today, Brad, you said y'all have got something new. Uh, have you already introduced it or is it something getting ready to come out? Tell us, tell us what's going on there at Eagle Seed. Yeah, no, Mike, it's brand-new, brand-new food plot. We call it Fieldcraft. And so we s- we, we started, you know... We, we've had wonderful success, success with our, our Smorgasbord product, our Broad- Broadside, uh, even our Buffalo Fall mix. And, and so not everybody, uh, can plant those broad, broad, uh, blended products i- if they have a weed problem. So we, we, we stepped back and we said, "Well, you know, what can we do to help the food plotter who's maybe dealing with an abundance of marestail or, or curly dock or, or vetch or onion or buttercup and, and, and things that, uh, can be fall problems?" A lot of these- Mm-hmm ... will, will germinate in the fall, but they're typically more of a problem in the spring, coming out of spring dormancy, and especially if this is your favorite turkey hunting spot. So, uh, Fieldcraft has got, it's got a new, new clover in it, um, that is 2,4-D resistant and, and also our, our, uh, our Rangemaster wheat and our, um, our Black Oats in there. So you can spray 2,4-D on there c- and control those broadleaf weeds in the spring, uh, and have, you know, a beautiful turkey plot to hunt over. Wow. Uh, also for deer as well, but, uh, that is something that we haven't had, the combination of those two and still be able to spray 2,4-D herbicide, which is, you know, is a well-known pasture herbicide. Not two, 2,4-DB, which can be sprayed on clover. This is the real 2,4-D herbicide. Wow. So that, that is a huge advantage for the farmers out there. It is, yeah. Marestail is, is a nasty weed that, that comes, um, you know, springing up. Curly dock can be really, really growthy. It, it looks kind of... It's broad-leafed, kinda like a, um, a, a brassica, but it's not. It's not tasty at all to any of the animals, the wildlife. Uh, vetch can be a problem. Onions, buttercup, uh, you see a lot of buttercup, a lot of those, you know- Mm-hmm fields of yellow, orange-ish flowers in the springtime. So those are, uh, usually you have to let 'em go in, in an, in a, a blend like Smorgasbord. But here we're giving you the option to be able to spray that 2,4-D and clean all those fields up. And, and like I said, we, we left the cereal rye out of Fieldcraft because cereal rye tends to be taller and could interfere with that turkey hunt, you know, seeing turkeys come into a field when- Sure you're sitting in a blind or, or on the ground. So we did keep that in mind when, when blending this product. All right, so, uh, Brad, with, with this blend, is this something that we wanna plant in the fall, or is it something you wanna plant early spring? That is correct. We would plant it in the fall, just like we would Smorgasbord- Okay or any of the others. And you can still plant 'em, you know, side by side, split 'em up in a field and, and just plant it where your problematic, uh, areas are with weeds. Okay. Very cool. So if you just got a part of a, an acre, uh, that, uh, is having problems with those weeds, you can put this and then put your Smorgasbord on the other part of the food plot. That's right, exactly. Yeah, so just, it's meant to complement or, or replace, you know, if, uh... But we wanted to, to offer something new to our customers. We've, we've had great success in, in the area, uh, and just want to, uh, continue to innovate and bring new products to the market. All right, so where is Fieldcraft available? I mean, is that something that you gotta special order- It is, yeah ... or is it pretty widely- You can, you can order it right now off of our website. You can call us directly and order it, and then our, our dealer network, they have access to it as well. Wow, very cool. Well, always learn... you know, always good to learn about new products. And, you know, as we opened the show, we talked about the fact that, that y'all are always researching and looking for the next big thing, something a little bit better, ways to improve the seed products that we do offer. And folks, there you go. Perfect example. Something now that you can use your 2,4-D to spray and not damage the crop. That's un- that's just unbelievable. It, it's, uh, i- it's another tool in the toolbox, Mike. You know, if, if you don't have, have that available to you, you never know. So we just, we just wanna make, make sure our customers have as many choices as possible and the, and the best of those choices. Okay, so let me ask you this. And we got a couple minutes left in this segment of the show. Um, what does Brad Doyle plant in his food plot? I, I, I tend to lean towards Smorgasbord. Um, you know, I go in, I, I, I looked at my, my food plots the other day. They're pretty grown up. Um, I've got, I've got our forage soybeans planted in the fields next to them, but inside the woods, uh, I let it, I l- let it grown up. So I'll go in there and probably mow it and, uh, and spray it, uh, kill that. So I- I'll... I've got two choices. I can use my drill, which is just kinda, kinda tight, uh, with my tractor and my roads and small, small plots, but I have a, like a scratcher pull-type, uh, ATV harrow. So I'll go in there. Um, I can, you know, put some fertilizer down, throw some seed down, and I'll scratch it once, maybe twice, and i- if I can run something across it and pack it back down, that's gonna help it, uh- Mm-hmm conserve the moisture. And, uh, but Smorgasbord's kinda been my go-to for, for my f- food plots, and I'll, I'll plant all my field edges with a drill, with Smorgasbord, and it works really well. Okay. Very cool. We've been talking food plotting and, and, you know, you should've done your, your, uh, soil test probably a month or two ago, just to make sure that you could get your, your lime or whatever it is that your soil is lacking. Get that in the ground and, uh, and get that on the field so it, you know, has an opportunity to take effect. But here we are coming up on time to actually get to planting, and we wanted to get with the expert, Mr. Brad Doyle from Eagle Seed. And, um, if you weren't with us in the last segment, we learned about a new product called FieldCraft, uh, that is a, uh, food product seed that is gonna give you a, um, a crop that you can use the 2,4-D to spray to get rid of the weeds. And before we went to the break in the last segment, I asked, you know, what is Brad Doyle's food plot, and you talked about the Smorgasbord, and I know Alex Rutledge had a little hand in helping put that together. Uh, what, how long ago was that? It, it's been several years now. That product's been around- It has been, Mike. You know, eight or 10 years ago, I, I went down- Mm-hmm ... to Alex's place. We're driving, driving through the property, you know, and he was explaining to me what, what he, what he wanted, what he'd like to see, how his deer reacted. So we kinda, we kinda, you know, scratched it on a pencil, you know, pen and paper there and, and, and we made that come to life, and it's just been a, a wonderful product. We have so many people who call and brag about it, and, uh, it's just a very versatile with, you know, 10 species in there and, um, and it carries you, you know, almost a year. We've got people who, who will, who will leave it out through the, through the summer. You know, they maybe, maybe have too many deer to, to plant a, a soybean plot, uh, in the spring or corn and, and, and so Smorgasbord comes out running early through turkey season and, and almost, like I said, 10 or 11 months they get to start over again, and it just, it's just great. Yeah, and- Great product ... yeah, yeah, and like you mentioned, one of the things about it is it, it, it is producing a new crop at different times of the year so your deer have got some variety in that food plot. That's true. And, and the wheat heads that it produces, and even the oat heads, the deer will come in and, and eat those. So you, you have, you have food, like you said, different plants have different, you know, um, uh, times that they're most available, most attractive, most nutritious. And so they let the deer figure that out, give them a buffet they can walk through there and eat whatever they, they want. But it also provides cover, and I think- Yeah that's where a lot of people miss out on, is when we have a bare field all through the summer, you know, where are the, where are the does gonna have their fawns? And th- this gives a lot of cover for, for not only deer, but turkey and other birds. You know, you start to see more rabbits and, and quail and things like that on your farm, which is very helpful. Yeah, and the folks that I know that use the Smorgasbord, one of the things they brag about is they don't have to replant clover in the spring because that clover comes back. It's there. It's there. Absolutely. Ready to go. We've got three phenomenal clovers. Uh, you know, and that's, we can talk about different types of clovers in a different, different, uh, show, but we have three really strong annual clovers, and they have, uh, different times that they take off, different times they bloom, so the pollinators are there longer, which attracts a lot of the turkeys and then things like that. But yeah, we have some of the best Uh, you know, we've got a, a new improved crimson, a new improved balansa and berseem clover in there that just really, really have high biomass, high adaptability, drought tolerance, uh, even, even water logging tolerance and drought stress tolerance. So we're trying to give you the best of the best there. All right. Very good. All right, so Brad, let's talk just a, a little bit, and we just got, uh, three or four minutes left here in the show. Food plotting, it seems to me, is getting bigger and bigger all the time. Is that the assessment y'all have at Eagle Seed? I mean, are you selling more seed these days than you did 10 years ago? Is, is food plotting really kind of taking over the industry like we feel like it is? Uh, you know, Mike, I, I think it is, and I, I think it's, you know, it's the landowner or the leaser, y- you know, they, they have a sense of, of building habitat by, by taking care of the land. So, you know, the, it's, it's, a lot of times they can't touch the trees. You know, the, the trees are there for the future, maybe for timber harvest or, or, or maybe they're just not, you know, they're, they're gonna be left undone. But food plotting is something that you can, you can plan, you can shape, you can manipulate, you know, year to year. You know, you're, you're basically farming your, your, you know, your property for wildlife, and so- Mm-hmm I think that is, in itself, is maybe a hobby. And so y- and you get to do it with the family. You know, your, your, you bring your dad out there, your mom, your, your kids, your grandkids or whatever, and they can, they can participate in that. And then you get to, you know, actually, whether you hunt over them or you don't, you can use them as nutrition, attraction plots. I think it's, it's an experience to sit there and, and, you know, uh, overlook a, a food plot. Are you gonna kill the biggest deer on your property in a food plot? Well, you don't know, you know, but you can, you know, visually see how many deer come in, and if all the does are coming in, and the bucks are chasing them. I mean, it just, it provides you an increased opportunity to see deer- Well- ... you know, and evaluate on your property. And it really ex- expands the season, because, you know, used to, okay, deer season's over, now I'm done till next September, October, whenever your season starts. Uh, but this, you know, food plotting, I think, is a way for the hunters out there to stay involved in the sport by getting their property ready, and getting their food plots put out, and making sure they're doing okay. And then, and then placing their Wiseye cameras out and watching those deer. And, you know, nothing like, you know, being 200 miles from home and your phone goes off, and you've got an eight-point standing in front of your Wiseye camera in your food plot. That is true. That is true. And, and there's a lot of that, the helpful information on, on our website that they can go to and visit. But, you know, some people, i- i- we, we've all seen that guy who just goes to the feed store, buys a bag of corn- Yeah ... pours it out, you know, in the dark, and then gets on his stand, and he expects to, to, you know, something to walk up and find it. But that food plot works for you 24/7, you know, and, and 12 months a year. So i- i- you're doing what you can. Is it guaranteed? No, nothing's guaranteed in life. But, you know, you know that you have the opportunity, especially when you have kids out there, to be able to, to har- maybe even, you know, management hunt or whatever, you need to harvest a few does, that you know you, they're gonna be there. So that's what's great about food plots. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I think somebody said the other day, a- another guest we had on a couple weeks ago, said, "You know, you're not planting food plots so much for the bucks. You're planting the food plots for the does, and then the bucks will follow them." And even if the ducks are using it at night, they're getting the benefit from the higher protein- Oh, sure and, and higher digestibility. So yeah, you might catch them away from the food plot when you're harvesting, but, you know, they are doing what they, uh, what they're supposed to out there. Uh, but here on the bonus, we like to talk, we like to talk about cooking, because Brad, what outdoorsman doesn't love to fire up a grill or the smoker or grab a skillet and cook up some deer meat or some quail or some rabbit and squirrel or whatever the case may be? Uh, do you, do you like to, to cook your wild game? I do, Mike, and you know, we are creeping up here on dove season. Oh, man. Dove season is just in a few short weeks and, and the doves are flying around here. My sunflowers, I've got some, uh, that are, that are, that will be ready by then, so very excited for dove season right around the corner. All right, now do you have a special way you like to prepare your dove? Yeah, so I grew up, you know, in the Delta here. A lot, back in the day it was milo fields. We used to plant a lot more m- more milo in the area. Uh, now it seems to be we sell a lot of sunflower seeds to the dove hunters, and so- Yeah ... um, i- it's, it's very common to have a dove hunt, and at lunch they'll, they'll cook up, you know, fire up the smokers or the grills, and they'll bacon wrap, sometimes put a jalapeno pepper, maybe a little cream cheese, and those doves are, you know, it's, it's, you're really just eating the breast of that dove- Yeah are very, very hard to beat. I've got a pellet grill, Mike. Mm-hmm. Uh, you know, some people think that's the easy button, and it is. It's, it's really easy, indirect heat with the pellets, and, uh, that is kinda my go-to. Um, but I would have to, I'd have, I'd put doves, dove breast against most anything, especially as far as, uh, wild birds. Yeah. Love it. Love it. Yeah, I, I would agree, although, man, it, it's hard to beat a big old plate full of fried, uh, quail along with some biscuits and gravy. Yeah. You're, you're making me think back in time when my grandmother used to make squirrel and gravy in a Crock-Pot. Oh, yeah, absolutely. So, I mean, if we wanna talk about the, you know, we, we've got, got options there. Uh, you know, another great thing about the pellet grill is that you can wrap a, a tenderloin in there. Mm-hmm. Uh, you know, you just gotta be careful not to dry it out too much. I think deer meat just being so lean, people tend to, to dry it out when they grill it- Mm-hmm ... uh, and that's maybe why fried is, is a, a, you know, a lot more popular choice- I would agree than that. 'Cause yeah, you might overcook it dur- you know, frying it, but, but, uh, yeah, you're right. I mean, quail is, is hard to beat. Rabbit even. Um, wild game in general just, I don't know, it's just something about being exotic. Uh, we don't eat it as much, but man, they've just got, there's just so many options and, and very flavorful. Yeah, and most of them do include a little bit of bacon. That is true. Yeah, bacon's good on everything, right? Even- Yeah, bacon good is- Yeah ... on al- almost everything. Absolutely. All right, so, uh- Yes ... yeah, and Brad, uh, talk about the pellet grill. I, I never was in favor of the pellet grills until I got one. Yeah. And, and 'cause I like, I like to be old-fashioned. I like the indirect heat and I like to build a fire, uh, you know, with some oak or some apple wood and maybe some, you know, get some hickory going in there, and do it the traditional old-fashioned way. Because I like to be hands-on, you know, trying to keep my, my fire going at the right temperature, not getting too hot or not getting too cool. But, uh, I, I actually came to have a pellet grill at my house about three months ago, and I gotta tell you, I have fallen in love with it. Now I can, and I'm still- You know, for- ... I'm still hands-on. I'm still right there- Yeah ... sitting next to it and checking it and- Yeah ... but, uh, man, setting that temperature- Yeah, for someone, someone, uh, Mike, who, who, who, like you said, growing up with a smoker, you had to, you had to babysit that thing, you know? Yeah. Even like a green egg for so much, you know, you have to get it just right before it, it really takes off. Yeah. And I think they're, they're pretty good. But yeah, the pellet grill, like you said, you have a, a ton of options on the types of woods. There's a ton of different brands out there. I've had a couple. Uh, you know, just find you a good reputable brand. Uh, parts, you know, I've replaced parts on, on my older one and, and, uh, it, it, I, I can, I can do that myself. I think, you know, there's minimal maintenance. You know, clean them up. Mm-hmm. Um, find where the hot spots are, 'cause some, some of them do have, have sweet spots on there. Oh, yeah. And then, you know, find that temperature. Yeah, do some... Uh, that's the great thing about YouTube. There's so many reviews and, and different ways to cook different seasonings. And so YouTube is your friend when it comes to finding what works best for you. But I lo- I love my pellet grill. Um, it's, sometimes it's, it's almost too easy, I'd say. Sometimes w- w- we have family over or have guests over and they have their... That might be the best whatever it was that we put on the pellet grill I've ever eaten in my life. Radbone, you, you need to open a restaurant. I'm like, no, you just need to get you a pellet grill. That's right. That's right. So- All right. Uh, Brad- I li- I tell you, Mike, I think maybe the weakness is maybe steaks. You know, some people like a- Yeah ... a good sear on a steak. That might be its weakness, that it's where, where a charcoal, you know, open, uh, direct grill- Oh, sure ... might be a, a better choice. Yeah, if you're talking about a beef steak, and, and I would even go so far, uh, as, uh, pork steaks. Because I like a little bit of a burn on my pork steaks- Yeah ... around the edges. Yeah. And then, and most generally don't get that, although they're really good out of the pellet smoker. But, uh, sometimes I'll, I'll put them in the pellet smoker and, and get them done, and then I'll go over and stick them on the grill just to get that char on. But wild game, I think it is, it is a, that, that's the way to go because- Yeah ... it is, it's very flexible and, you know, if you don't mind peeking in on it, you know, five or 10 minutes early and just making sure you don't overcook it, I think pellet grills are- Absolutely ... are awesome for that.
